Tokyo Stocks Close Lower as Energy Stocks Slide on Oil Price Drop-June 22

Tokyo stocks closed marginally lower Thursday as U.S. equities dropping overnight on falling prices for crude oil saw energy stocks here retreat amid a circumspect market mood.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average edged down 28.28 points, or 0.14 percent, from Wednesday to end the day at 20,110.51.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, shed 1.18 points, or 0.07 percent, to close at 1,610.38.

Mining, insurance, and oil and coal product-related issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play, and advancing issues outpaced declining ones by 992 to 876 on the First Section.

Trading volume on the main section on Thursday came to 1,550.40 million shares, declining from Wednesday's volume of 1,634.36 million shares.

The turnover on the penultimate trading day of the week totaled 2,077.1 billion yen (18.70 billion U.S. dollars).
