Tokyo stocks closed lower Tuesday as the yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar weighed on exporters while the tone of the broader market was set by Wall Street's poor performance overnight.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 190.92 points, or 0.95 percent, from Monday to end the day at 19,979.90.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 13.53 points, or 0.84 percent, to close the day at 1,596.44.
Pharmaceutical, marine transportation and machinery-linked issues led those that notably lost ground by the close of play, and declining issues outpaced advancing ones by 1,635 to 292, on the First Section.
Trading volume on the main section on Tuesday came to 1,704.82 million shares, up from Monday's volume of 1,648.11 million shares.
The turnover on the second trading day of the week totaled 2,467.1 billion yen (22.50 billion U.S. dollars).
